CURATORIAL STATEMENT (EXCERPT) BY JOSE RUIZ The artist has developed a singular painting style that jostles and challenges the strict parameters of landscape, representation, abstraction, and color field painting with a spirited, improvisational, and mash-up approach. At the same time, his newest works are also deeply rooted in the aural/virtual phenomenon that organically transforms listening and seeing into a habitual state of production. Concomitant with the making of these paintings, Casey Smith, DC-based artist Nilay Lawson, and the artist produced a small book entitled Guide (available at the gallery). Conceived as a silhouette to traditional exhibition catalogs, Guide operates as pictorial study of images and ephemera that travel alongside the artist’s studio practice—simultaneously informing and referencing the works in The Phono- Graphic Cycle.
